Gender Equality

Gender Equality

The Central Gender Equality Commissioner supports the university board in its task to establish gender equality in science, research, teaching and maintenance and administration and to reduce discrimination specifically against women at the university. The primary goals are to increase the proportion of women in all areas in which women are under-represented (especially in research and teaching and in leadership positions), as well as a shift towards a comprehensive gender-equitable organizational culture. Information and measures aiming towards the promotion of gender diversity are accessible here.

In the faculties Gender Equality Commissioners and their agents deal with tasks in the area of recruiting and appointment procedures.

Instruments and structures of gender equality

Central Committee for Gender Equality

The Central Committee for Gender Equality of the University Senate offers competent support and assistance regarding the work on gender equaltiy. The committee is also responsible for monitoring the appropriation of funds. All status groups are represented by equal shares, at least 25% of the members have to be men. The Central Committee for Gender Equality is shared by the Gender Equality Commissioner. Here you can find the current members of the Central Committee for Gender Equality (in German).

Gender Equality Plan (GEP)

According to the Higher Education Act, the structural and development plan of Kiel University must include a GEP. The GEP for the years 2020-2024 can be found here.

To support the work for gender equality politics, Kiel University has concluded specific goals (in German, internal Link) with the federal state government. These were monitored between 2014 and 2018.

Gender Equality at faculties

All eight faculties have their own Gender Equality Commissioners to promote the faculty work on equal opportunities. Their tasks are e.g. the participation at appointment committees and appointment procedures for scientific staff and the promotion of gender equality measures within the faculty. Most faculties have established their own gender equality committee. According to the current GEP of Kiel University (2020-2024), all faculties should have established their own GEP until 2022.

Lesley Drewing program for Gender Equality Commissioners of the faculties

Dr. Lesley Drewing has been the Gender Equality Commissioner of the "Pädagogische Hochschule" Kiel between 1991 and 1997 and afterwards the gender equality commissioner of Kiel University until 2005. During this time, she set milestones to rework and promote gender equality, at the time a politically difficult topic within Kiel University. She passed away unexpectedly in June 2005, during her second elected term, leaving behind a huge humane and structural gap.
Lesley Drewing has always supported the Gender Equality Commissioners of the faculties with her expertise and advice. In memory of her fundamental work the "Program to Professionalize Gender Equality Work at Faculties of Kiel University" carries her name.
This program professionalizes the gender equality work at the faculties, supports their commissioners and reinforces their skills. It is open to all Gender Equality Commissioners and free of charge. Applications, suggestions and questions about the program can be adressed directly to the Gender Equality Commissioner of Kiel University.

Inclusive language

Equality among men and women also implies equality in language. More information and guidline can be found here.
