Agricultural Sciences - Course of Study

The agricultural sciences refer to all disciplines that deal with the economical and ecological use of soil for the purpose of plant cultivation or animal husbandry. The course of study, therefore, contains a vast array of subjects stemming from the areas of natural science, economics as well as technology.
The international degrees Bachelor of Science and Master of Science offer graduates a competitive edge in our increasingly international job market.

Kiel's agricultural graduates have excellent chances in today's employment market due to the practical, application-oriented nature of the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences' program of studies. Professors and students work closely together in the pursuit of academic goals.
The city of Kiel and its surrounding area also have a lot to offer – beaches, sea, sailing, pubs, discos, theater, student parties and the well-known 'Kieler Woche'. In other words, students have the chance to study where other people spend their holidays.

Bachelor of Science (Duration: 6 semesters, 180 ECTS)

A three-month practicum on a farm is a study prerequisite. It is possible to divide this practicum into two equal parts and can, in special situations, also be completed while studying. Further information can be obtained from the Praktikantenamt (Practicum Office).

B. Sc. - Introductory Study Period

The Bachelor of Science program introduces students to the basics of agricultural science and all of its disciplines as well as the methodological and practical skills required in the chosen area of study.
The course of studies consists of introductory or basic studies, specialization studies, a farm practicum and the final Bachelor thesis. The 1 ½ year introductory or basic study period contains modules on the propaedeutic subjects and the fundamentals of all disciplines of Agricultural Science. The 1 ½ year specialization study period contains specialized modules devoted to the chosen field of study.

B.Sc. - Specialization Study Period

The specialization study period requires students to select one of the following specializations:
      – Crop Science
      – Animal Science
      – Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness
      – Environmental Science

Master of Science (Duration: 4 semesters, 120 ECTS)

The M. Sc. program in Agricultural Science focuses on a chosen area of specialization, provides an overview of associated issues in related disciplines and promotes the ability to carry out scientific work and apply scientific standards, all of which are necessary for a successful transition into the world of work. It includes a 1 ½ year in-depth scientific examination of the material covered in the Bachelor program and the writing of a Master's thesis, for which another 6 months are required.

Advanced Studies
One of the following disciplines must be selected in the Master's program:
     – Crop Science
     – Animal Science (additional certificate in Dairy Production available)
     – Agricultural Economics
     – Agribusiness
     – Environmental Sciences


A scientific Master's thesis must be independently completed. Its subject and format are individually selected by the student in consultation with his or her designated supervisor.

Career Perspectives
Kiel's comprehensive and focused Agricultural Science program opens up a plethora of professional opportunities within the field of practical agriculture and beyond.

Opportunities Within the Private Sector
Companies active in the areas of feed and fertilizer, pest management, agricultural machinery, plant breeding and livestock breeding present opportunities for graduates, especially in the areas of product development, quality assurance and sales (e.g. research leaders in research and
development departments, product managers, marketing directors, sales managers and salesmen). A wide variety of job opportunities are also to be found in companies within the service sector such as planning and engineering offices, technical support organizations (e.g. in the evaluation and planning of ecological, environmentally-relevant or waste disposal projects), in consultancy firms (e.g. advising on scientific, production-related, technological or economical issues), as well as in financial service companies, insurance companies, advertising agencies, specialized media companies and agricultural tourism organizations. Companies within the food industry, agricultural cooperatives and farmers' associations present job opportunities predominantly in the fields of raw material procurement, quality assurance, product development, marketing, controlling and sales within the areas of manufacturing and commerce.
Agricultural scientists are, for the most part, present within the management and administration of agricultural companies.

Associations and Organizations
Administrative and management positions for qualified agricultural scientists are to be found within various farming and agricultural associations (e.g. farmers' associations, breeders' associations,
producer groups), in environmental and conservation associations and clubs, as well as in international organizations such as UNICEF, E.U., FAO and WHO.

Public Service Sector
Public service requires, for the most part, a 1 to 2 year internship. This could possibly lead to teaching accreditation for vocational or technical schools or to a career in administrative or public service in public offices or ministries such as the following: federal or state ministries, departments of agriculture and landscape development, chambers of agriculture as well as environmental offices, land consolidation offices and settlement offices.

Research and Teaching
Doctoral and post-doctoral degrees open doors to scientific research and teaching positions at universities, colleges and in federal or state research institutions.

Occupational Requirements
Today's job market requires university graduates to demonstrate a high degree of flexibility, creativity and personality as well as organizational talent, the ability to work well in a team and excellent communication skills. In addition to these key requirements, one must also have the ability to recognize problems and solve them accordingly using the methods and theories acquired during one's education.
Candidates for management positions also require leadership skills and knowledge of foreign languages. The Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences, therefore, promotes the internationalization of studies, thus promoting the mobility of its students and graduates in an increasingly united Europe. Its cooperation with numerous European universities within the framework of the ERASMUS / SOCRATES and TEMPUS programs has been fruitful for many years, providing students also with the opportunity to study abroad.

Student Body Representatives
Agricultural and Nutritional Science students have their own student body representatives (Fachschaft). The 'Fachschaft' is comprised of elected students who represent the student body of the Faculty as well as volunteers. These representatives represent the interests of the students,
organize events (e.g. the first semester breakfast, camping parties, the farmer's ball) and offer student counseling and support, in particular to first semester students.

Mentoring Program
Upon enrollment, every student is assigned a mentor from among the student body. This mentor is there to provide answers to study-related questions.

General Information
Brochures on studying Agricultural Science can be found in the Dean's Office. The Agricultural Science student counsellor and the Fachschaft's counsellors are there, as well, to answer individual questions.
